Title: The role of STS education in the scientific and technological literacy for all.

Abstract: The motto scientific and technological literacy (STL) for all is influencing the aims of science education along the last years. This paper discusses the wide, diffuse, complex, and multifaceted character of STL that has not allowed the scholars to achieve consensus about its meaning. As some STL issues and understandings could not fit well for all the students, the partial opposition between some literacy contents and the prescription for all is also analysed. It is claimed that the principles and orientations of the STS educational movement can bridge both opposite poles as they offer the soundest answer to many of the forthcoming educational challenges raised by the science education aimed to the scientific and technological literacy for all. Lastly, for setting into practice these ideas, some current problems are also discussed from the perspective of the Spanish educational system, such as the gap between the planned curriculum and the applied curriculum within the classroom, the role of science education on these issues, and other reefs that act against the coherent integration of these innovations.

Keywords: scientific and technological literacy, science and technology for all, STS education, aims of science education.
